From 1st January, many natural health products will be banned in the UK because of the ‘EU Food Supplements Directive’. Apart from ‘an approved list’ hundreds of products that have been selling freely in the UK will be banned!
Conservatives believe that ‘consumers must be allowed to have free access to safe supplements of their choice’.
If elected MP for Brighton Kemptown, I (along with my Conservative colleagues) will be a firm opponent of the proposed EU Food Supplements Directive.
Brighton & Hove’s Conservative cabinet have formally reached agreement that the council will join the national 10:10 campaign to cut carbon emissions by 10% in 2010-11.
Council Leader Mary Mears will be writing to the Local organisations, businesses, community and voluntary organisations, to persuade as many as possible to sign up for the campaign.
Councillor Mears said: “This is a big challenge but one we think is achievable.
“A low carbon Brighton & Hove is our top sustainability priority and this is a real opportunity to re-energise our staff, be bold, and inspire others across the city to do the same.
“We’ve already made efficiencies right across our own buildings, vehicle fleet and even our street lighting, achieving savings of about £145,000 and nearly 400 tonnes of CO2. Now we need to go further, and by saving energy and CO2, we will also be saving council taxpayers’ money.”
Before this agreement, the council’s target carbon reduction was 4% per year for the next five years.
A report will be brought to the January meeting of the Sustainability Cabinet Committee outlining the measures which will be taken.
Council initiatives to reduce carbon emissions include: · Launching a £6 million energy efficiency grant scheme over three years to help householders cut costs and carbon emissions · Installing a network of electric car charging points in the city · Committing the council and the city to tough, short-term targets to cut carbon dioxide emissions – by 12% over three years · Helping secure £180,000 from the Department for International Development for Climate Connections, a three year city-wide public engagement project · Playing an integral part in helping the city’s Food Partnership secure a grant of £500,000 over four years · Running the Be Local Buy Local campaign to support local jobs and the environment.
Last night, Charlotte Vere was selected as the Conservative candidate for our neighbouring seat - Brighton Pavilion. I would like to congratulate Charlotte and wish her all the best for her Campaign. With her keen interest in the environment she will certainly give Caroline Lucas a run for her money. Conservatives are now working hard in all 3 Brighton & Hove constituencies to oust Gordon Brown and his 'well past sell by date' government.
Yesterday was the last Queen's speech before the General Election. This was the shortest Queen's speech since 1997. David Cameron said in his speech to the House of Commons yesterday 'They've run out of money, run out of time, run out of ideas'. Gordon Brown said he will legislate to halve the budget deficit; however there was not one single new measure mentioned to make this happen. Gordon Brown says he wants to clean up politics; however no new legislation was mentioned, against the advice of Sir Christopher Kelly. Gordon Brown has announced free personal care for only a fraction of those most in need, again with no mention of how this will be paid for. This was a nonsense speech, with no time for most of the measures to be passed into law.
I am Simon Kirby, and have been selected to be the candidate for Brighton Kemptown Conservatives at the 2010 General Election. My family live in Brighton Kemptown - a great place to live! I have represented Kemptown on East Sussex County Council and have served as a Brighton & Hove councillor.
